The “Yellow City” of Izamal is east of Merida, about 90 minutes’ drive from Progreso.
Virtually all the downtown buildings are painted this mustard yellow color.
This is the central plaza, with the Convent in the background.
This is a retail block; there are shop doors under all those arches.
We had an incredible lunch at this little place in the spotlessly-clean Mercado Municipal! Little tortillas with delicately-sauced turkey on them. Four tortillas and two sodas came to about three dollars.
While we’re at it, when is the last time you saw a doctor for 20 bucks? (But no, those aren’t dollars, they’re pesos. A consultation with this local physician goes for about US$1.95.)
This is Izamal’s beautiful convento, now a national archaeological site.
